Chinese calligraphy and traditional painting are two of the most precious treasures of Chinese culture, rich in history and artistic value. This course aims to provide students with an in-depth opportunity to learn and experience Chinese calligraphy and traditional painting, helping them master the basic techniques of calligraphy and painting, and understand the cultural background and artistic essence of these two art forms. The course covers the fundamentals of Chinese calligraphy, the traditional techniques and painting philosophies of Chinese painting, as well as the cultural significance and artistic expression involved in creative works. Through a progressive teaching approach, students will not only learn traditional techniques but also experience the joy and fulfillment of artistic creation.
In the calligraphy section, students will begin with basic brushstroke exercises, learning how to hold the brush correctly, and familiarize themselves with the use of brushes, ink, and rice paper. Through continuous practice, they will gradually master the writing techniques of different scripts, including seal script, clerical script, regular script, running script, and cursive script. The course will guide students through the process of copying classic calligraphy works, such as “Preface to the Orchid Pavilion” and “The Yueyang Tower Inscription,” helping them understand the structure of characters, stroke arrangement, and the artistic expression of calligraphy. Students will also learn about famous calligraphy masters from different historical periods, such as Wang Xizhi, Yan Zhenqing, and Zhao Mengfu, and explore the relationship between calligraphy, ancient Chinese philosophy, and literature. This will provide an understanding of how calligraphy conveys emotions and thoughts.
In the Chinese painting section, students will learn how to use traditional tools, such as brushes, ink, and rice paper, to create artworks. They will master the painting techniques for classic subjects such as landscape painting, flower and bird painting, and figure painting. The course will delve into the composition and expressive techniques of Chinese painting, exploring how to use the flow of ink, layering, and changes in perspective to convey a sense of space and depth. In particular, students will learn the two styles in landscape painting: “xieyi” (freehand brushwork) and “gongbi” (meticulous brushwork), and understand the importance of “artistic conception” in landscape painting. In flower and bird painting, students will learn to depict various flowers, birds, and other elements of nature, capturing their spirit and beauty. Figure painting will focus on how to use delicate brushstrokes and ink to express the character and demeanor of individuals.
Moreover, the course places a special emphasis on the use of traditional artistic materials, introducing students to the selection and maintenance of tools such as brushes, ink blocks, and rice paper, helping them master the basic process of artistic creation. At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to showcase their works in a small exhibition, sharing their creative insights and exchanging ideas with fellow students.
Through this course, students will not only enhance their artistic skills but also gain a deep understanding of the culture and philosophy behind Chinese calligraphy and painting, appreciating the unique charm and profound meaning of traditional Chinese art.
