Story

Ancient Greek art is one of the peaks of ancient civilization, especially in the fields of pottery and sculpture. Greek pottery and sculpture not only reflect ancient Greek religious beliefs and societal values but also showcase humanity’s pursuit of aesthetics and ideals. In this course, students will delve into the origins and development of Ancient Greek art, learn its exceptional techniques and creative methods, and ultimately create pottery and sculpture pieces in the distinctive Ancient Greek style.

The first part of the course will take students through the history of Ancient Greek art, from the early Greek art of the 8th century BC to the peak period of Greek sculpture and pottery, covering the cultural background of Greek mythology, philosophy, and politics. Students will understand how Greek artists used sculpture and pottery to express their pursuit of beauty and harmony, as well as how these works convey deep insights into life, divinity, and human form.

In the pottery section, students will learn classic Greek pottery techniques, including the famous black-figure and red-figure pottery. The course will cover the creation of common pottery forms like drinking cups, plates, vases, and jars, with a special focus on decorative patterns and symbols on the pottery’s surface, such as mythological stories, gods, and athletic events. Students will learn how to design and paint these motifs, while also practicing Greek glazing and firing techniques, understanding how different temperatures and firing methods affect the final result.

The sculpture section will focus on human figure sculpting techniques. Students will learn how to create idealized human proportions and dynamic poses, capturing the Greek aesthetic ideal. Techniques for carving facial expressions, muscle lines, and other details will be taught. The course will also explore how Greek sculptures depict mythological figures such as Heracles, Apollo, and Athena, teaching students how to convey the power and essence of these gods through sculpture.

Beyond technical skills, the course will encourage students to reflect on how Greek aesthetics and philosophy influenced artistic creation, exploring Plato’s and Aristotle’s theories on art, and how art embodies “harmony.” In the final personal project, students will combine pottery and sculpture techniques to create a piece in the Greek style, showcasing their understanding and respect for Ancient Greek art.

At the end of the course, there will be a final exhibition and feedback session. Students will have the opportunity to share their work and process with peers, and the instructor will provide in-depth analysis and critique, helping students refine their skills and artistic expression.
